Miracles Happen..!

Not often I get to write silly blog entries, but this one just had to be shared…

A couple of weeks ago at an open water dive at Littleton Lake, a new student to open water, added to a regular tradition of losing their equipment in the lake… This happens to at least one new student a year. I bet there must be more snorkels, fins and other odds and ends in that lake than in a dive shop..!

I bet if we ever dredged it, there would be over 40 years worth of diving technology found! It would not only be shocking, but historical too.

Anyway, the piece of equipment this time round was a lone fin. Lost mid water half way out into the lake. Traditionally, once lost, the silty bottom will swallow up any item, never to be seen again. In the 35 years Ive been diving there, I can count on one hand the items recovered when lost. Then usually only if caught almost immediately at the time.

Never has anyone recovered anything after the fact.

After pleas from the students mother to take another look, instructors Will and Nathan, decided to take their scuba gear and give the bottom of the lake a search, in the off chance something might be spotted. It was thought to be a fallorn hope, but it meant they got a cheeky dive in before a snorkel session. So it was worth a go.

Amazingly, as they swam across the silty bed, Nathan spotted a small sand bank rising out from the silt, and on it was a lonely solitary fin… The exact fin they were searching for!

Needless to say, it was recovered. Well, recovered, more moved. Moved to the underwater platform and left for one of the students to later recover when they arrived later that afternoon. You have to have something to challenge your students after all…

The fin was duly recovered and will be returned to its rightful owner very soon. Much to an extatic mum, who no longer has to replace a brand new set of fins…

So despite the lakes best efforts, for once, a miracle happened, and it gave up its stolen treasure…

The Miracle Fin…
